Sofia has over 15 years’ experience in life insurance and personal injury litigation and advice. She has practised predominantly in superannuation, life and disability insurance since 2005.

During this time, Sofia has represented multiple life insurers and trustees in litigation across all court jurisdictions and in connection with complaints made to the Financial Ombudsman Service, the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal, and the Office of the Australian Information Commission.

Early in her career, Sofia acted for insureds as a plaintiff lawyer with a leading plaintiff law firm in the area of superannuation, life and disability insurance, public liability, class actions involving personal injury, workers compensation, transport accidents, and asbestos litigation. During this time, she developed an excellent understanding of litigation and complaint resolution from the perspective of plaintiffs.

Sofia subsequently worked in-house as senior legal counsel for a large Australian financial service provider advising internal stakeholders on a broad range of legal matters affecting liability and indemnity, policy construction (including the drafting of policy wording), effective claims management and underwriting, improvements to operational forms and procedures, legislative interpretation, compliance, risk management, complaints, dispute resolution (including alternative dispute resolution) and litigation.

Sofia has well-honed skills in managing litigation in all jurisdictions, leading high end negotiations, and formulating strategies for expeditious resolution of proceedings which are also on the most favourable terms for her clients.

In addition, Sofia regularly presents on legal developments in life insurance at seminars as well as arranging and delivering targeted client training sessions on practical applications of the law. Her unique experience – gained in-house and in private practice for both plaintiff and defendant – allows her to utilise the insights gained to add real value to her client relationships.
