Melbourne-based Special Counsel Paul Mentor is a highly experienced and senior personal injuries practitioner with well-established credentials in conducting legal matters for government, including the State of Victoria and the Commonwealth of Australia.
During his career, Paul has acted for numerous government agencies, including conducting administrative law matters in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Federal Magistrates’ Court and the Federal Court of Australia on behalf of Centrelink and Medicare. This has included appearing before the AAT and Federal Court successfully arguing that an application is frivolous and vexatious and appearing for Centrelink on appeals in the Federal Court. He has also provided advice in relation to issues arising under social security legislation.
Paul is also experienced in handling class actions involving government departments and led the defence team for a Victorian Government department joined to a highly publicised class action.
Other experience includes a secondment of approximately six months to Centrelink as acting National Manager Legal Services. During that period, Paul’s responsibilities included developing improved legal risk management capability within Centrelink and supervising workplace teams handling administrative law, Freedom of Information and privacy and customer compensation requests. In addition, Paul was involved in advising on government issues, legislative compliance, statutory drafting and interpretation and preparation of Instruments of Delegation and Memorandums of Understanding.
Paul is highly adept in providing clients with legal updates, including regularly delivering seminar presentations. This includes a recent presentation to participants in the Commonwealth Compensation scheme regarding the Comcare permanent impairment guide.
